What is VoIP

Short for Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP is the internet protocol that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. Voice-over-IP systems carry telephony signals as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques.

MWEB's VoIP service offering

  • MWEB Africa's VoIP solution has been optimised to work efficiently over its VSAT (satellite) platform through a unique service feature that reserves bandwidth specifically for the VoIP service. Users experience quality voice speech throughout the conversation as a consequence of bandwidth reservation and voice prioritisation.

  • MWEB together with our extensive distribution network deliver turnkey solutions including optional telephone numbers (DID's) in over 20 countries, cost effective VoIP telephone rates, downloadable thirdparty softphone client for your pc as well as professional services to ensure that we provide a solution for your needs.

  • MWEB has an engineering team working 24*7, 365 days a year providing network management, optimisation and support services.

  • MWEB has partnered with best of breed international terminating partners with established links to all major network operators throughout the world, ensuring a quality voice termination and global footprint.

  • Benefits

  • Provides reliable, quality voice communication.

  • Available anywhere in Africa on the MWEB VSAT footprint

  • Saves on communication costs

  • Free VoIP to VoIP and inbound international calls

  • Integration with voice & data applications on a single network

  • Flexible pricing options

  • VSAT Features

  • MWEB's VoIP Channel feature makes it possible to reserve dedicated bandwidth for the duration of a voice call. This feature, currently only available on the iDirect VSAT platform, facilitates high quality voice during a call, and is only available to MWEB customers.

  • Converge voice and data on a single network allows the customer to have a single network infrastructure for all communication requirements. This reduces the total cost of infrastructure as well as support and operating costs.

    VoIP Call features

  • Make calls to other MWEB VoIP users at NO COST regardless of their physical location.

  • Make local and international calls at a fraction of the cost when compared with current fixed line or mobile operators.

  • VoIP customers will receive calls at no cost. A customer will however have to subscribe to the Direct Inward Dial (DID) service to get a telephone number. DID's are charged at a low monthly subscription. The DID service is an optional service.

  • More especially by selecting a DID in one of 20 destinations the calling party may also benefit from reduced call costs as a result of DID selection in the country where the calling party is located.

  • Make calls directly from your PC with the use of a headset and the VoIP software softphone, which is downloadable for free.

    Subscriber Self-Help

  • You can check available voice call credits and call history via an online portal.

  • Purchase credits on-line and in real-time.

    Re-use existing hardware components

  • MWEB's VoIP service can be used in conjunction with the customers legacy telephony infrastructure. Make calls from your traditional analogue voice telephone that can be plugged directly in an ATA device (purchased separately).

  • Connect as many telephone lines as may be required directly into the ATA device (various configuration ATA devices are available). Just remember that if you require more than one concurrent voice call you will be required to purchase more than one VoIP channel.
